Tilak — तिलक

The forehead mark identifying a Vaishnav's sampraday — the urdhva-pundra, drawn upward, not across.

Vaishnav tilak is vertical (urdhva-pundra), symbolising the feet of Bhagavan and the ascent of the soul. Each sampraday has a distinct shape and colour: Ramanandi, Nimbarka, Madhva and Vallabh marks all differ.

It is applied with gopi-chandan, sandal paste or clay from a sacred site, usually after snan and before puja.

तिलक — अर्थ

माथे का चिह्न जो वैष्णव के सम्प्रदाय की पहचान है — ऊर्ध्वपुण्ड्र, जो ऊपर की ओर खींचा जाता है।

वैष्णव तिलक ऊर्ध्वपुण्ड्र होता है, जो भगवान के चरण और आत्मा की ऊर्ध्वगति का प्रतीक है। रामानंदी, निम्बार्क, माध्व और वल्लभ — हर सम्प्रदाय का आकार और रंग भिन्न है।

इसे गोपी-चंदन, चंदन या तीर्थ की मृत्तिका से, प्रायः स्नान के बाद और पूजा से पूर्व लगाया जाता है।
