Naga Sadhu — नागा साधु

The martial renunciant order of the akhadas, historically raised to protect pilgrims, temples and maths.

Vaishnav Nagas belong to the Bairagi akhadas (Digambar, Nirmohi, Nirvani and their subdivisions) — distinct from the Shaiva Naga akhadas that are more widely photographed at Kumbh.

Initiation is staged and can take years, moving through service, study, and formal vows before full Naga status. At Kumbh Mela the akhadas process in a fixed traditional order for the shahi snan.

नागा साधु — अर्थ

अखाड़ों का शस्त्रधारी विरक्त वर्ग, जो ऐतिहासिक रूप से तीर्थयात्रियों, मंदिरों और मठों की रक्षा हेतु खड़ा हुआ।

वैष्णव नागा बैरागी अखाड़ों (दिगम्बर, निर्मोही, निर्वाणी और उनकी उपशाखाएँ) से जुड़े होते हैं — ये शैव नागा अखाड़ों से भिन्न हैं, जो कुम्भ में अधिक दिखते हैं।

दीक्षा क्रमिक होती है और वर्षों लग सकते हैं — सेवा, अध्ययन और औपचारिक व्रत के बाद पूर्ण नागा पद मिलता है। कुम्भ में अखाड़े परम्परागत क्रम से शाही स्नान करते हैं।
