Gotra — गोत्र

A patrilineal clan identity tracing descent from an ancient rishi, used in marriage matching and rituals.

Gotra names the rishi from whom a family claims descent — Bharadwaj, Kashyap, Vashistha, Gautam and others. It is recited in sankalpa during rituals.

Traditionally marriage avoids same-gotra alliances on the paternal side. In practice families also consider kul, village and guru lineage.

गोत्र — अर्थ

पितृवंशीय कुल पहचान, जो किसी प्राचीन ऋषि से वंश बताती है; विवाह मिलान और संस्कारों में प्रयुक्त।

गोत्र उस ऋषि का नाम है जिससे परिवार अपना वंश मानता है — भारद्वाज, कश्यप, वशिष्ठ, गौतम आदि। संस्कारों के संकल्प में इसका उच्चारण होता है।

परम्परा में पितृपक्ष के सगोत्र विवाह से बचा जाता है। व्यवहार में परिवार कुल, गाँव और गुरु परम्परा भी देखते हैं।
