Urdhvapundra — the Vaishnav tilak

Two upward lines with a central mark, applied after bathing — the clearest daily sign of Vaishnav identity and of which sampraday a family follows.

The urdhvapundra is drawn with gopichandan or mrittika. The two upward strokes are understood as the feet of the Lord and as a reminder that the body is His temple; the central line or dot represents Lakshmi or the tulsi leaf. Shape and colour differ by lineage: Ramanandi and Sri Sampraday wear a U-shaped mark with a red or yellow centre; Madhva lineages wear a straight black line of gopichandan with a turmeric dot; Nimbarki tilak meets in a rounded base with a central bindu; Vallabh lineages wear two narrow vertical lines. Teaching a child to apply tilak is often the first formal step of religious education in a Bairagi household.
