Kanthi and tulsi mala — taking diksha
The tulsi bead necklace is worn at initiation by a guru and marks formal entry into a lineage with its mantra and code of conduct.
Diksha is given by a guru of a recognised parampara. The disciple receives the kanthi of tulsi wood, a mantra, and a rule of life: truthful speech, a vegetarian sattvic diet, respect for tulsi and cows, daily naam jap and the habit of offering food to the Lord before eating. In many Bairagi families the kanthi is given in childhood by the kul guru and renewed at marriage. The guru's line, recorded as guru parampara, is the spiritual counterpart of gotra and is still asked for in marriage discussions.
