Vishnu bhakti in the Vedic and Puranic age
Vaishnavism begins with the Vedic hymns to Vishnu and matures through the Puranas, the Bhagavad Gita and the Bhagavata, where surrender (sharanagati) becomes the central path.
The earliest layer of Vaishnav identity is not sectarian but devotional. Vishnu appears in the Rigveda as the deity of the three strides who measures the worlds; later the Narayaniya section of the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad Gita and the Bhagavata Purana build a complete theology around a personal, gracious God and a devotee who takes refuge in Him. The Pancharatra and Vaikhanasa manuals systematise temple worship, image consecration and daily service. This ancient layer supplies the vocabulary that every later Vaishnav lineage still uses: bhakti, prapatti, seva, prasad, tulsi, chakra and shankha.
