Swami Ramanand and the north Indian bhakti wave

Ramanand is remembered as a major north Indian bhakti teacher associated with the Ramanandi tradition. The dates, institutional origins and relationship to Sri Vaishnava lineages remain debated; Bairagi identities have varied across regions and periods.

Devotional biographies and later lineage accounts associate Ramanand with teaching in the vernacular and a broad circle of disciples. These accounts are important to Ramanandi memory, but are not all contemporary records. Scholarship debates the relationship between Ramanand, Sri Vaishnava lineages and the later formation of Ramanandi institutions. Bairagi and Vairagi labels came to describe varied ascetic and householder identities; they should not be treated as one uniform descent group.
