Householder settlement, census records and samaj sabhas
Ascetic lineages settle into householder villages across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Maharashtra; caste sabhas and dharmshalas take shape.
Colonial surveys recorded Bairagi, Vairagi, Vaishnav, Sadhu and Swami as related entries, often noting that these families were once monastic and had taken to farming, temple service, trade, ayurveda and teaching. Community sabhas were founded to run dharmshalas, marriage registers, student hostels and relief funds. This is the period in which the recognisable structures of today's samaj appear: the panchayat, the samaj bhawan, the annual sammelan and the printed biodata.
