Ani akhadas, Kumbh authority and the warrior ascetic

Ramanandi ascetic networks came to be associated with three Ani groupings — Digambar, Nirvani and Nirmohi. Their institutional chronology, military roles and Kumbh precedence vary across historical studies and community accounts.

From the early modern period, some north Indian Vaishnav ascetics developed organised camps and, in particular settings, armed institutions. Scholarship connects this development with pilgrimage economies, competition among ascetic orders, patronage and political insecurity; it does not support one simple foundation date. Digambar, Nirvani and Nirmohi Ani are prominent names in present Ramanandi organisation and Kumbh processions. Local records may also connect particular maths, land grants or temple responsibilities to these networks, but such claims require institution-specific evidence.
