The Alvars and the four acharyas

Tamil Alvar saints turn devotion into song; Ramanuja, Madhva, Nimbarka and Vallabha then give Vaishnavism its four philosophical sampradayas.

Twelve Alvar poets of the Tamil country sang of Vishnu in the people's language and made temple towns such as Srirangam and Tirupati living centres of pilgrimage. Their verses were gathered as the Divya Prabandham and treated as Tamil Veda. On this foundation Ramanujacharya built Vishishtadvaita and opened temple worship to devotees of every background; Madhvacharya taught Dvaita and an unbreakable dependence of the soul on Hari; Nimbarkacharya taught Dvaitadvaita and the worship of Radha-Krishna; Vallabhacharya taught Shuddhadvaita and the seva of Shrinathji. These four became the Chatuh Sampradaya, the doctrinal spine that later Bairagi and Ramanandi lineages inherit.
